History
Located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou
No.2 High School enjoys a high reputation in South
China. As one of the first high schools of modern
educational style, it grew out of Private Hui
Lan Middle School and State-Run Zhejiang University
Affiliated Middle School.
In August 1951, the two schools merged in the
original site of Hui Lan Middle School with the
current name. In 1978, it was listed as one of
the Key Middle Schools in Zhejiang Province and
in 1995, it was appointed as a First-class Key
Middle School after the assessment of Zhejiang
Education Committee.
The present principal, Mr. Ye Cuiwei, the former
deputy director of Beihai Education Committee,
Guangxi Province and former principal of Beihai
Middle School, took the place after wining a nationwide
competition in 2000.
Glorious
Achievements
Since 1989, students in Hangzhou No. 2 High School
have won over 2000 prizes in various provincial
and national competitions, which helps it keep
its leading place in this field in Zhejiang Province.
Regarding it as its responsibility to make talent
of high quality out of its students, the school
recommends about 30 top students for admission
into famous universities such as Peking University
and Qinghua University every year. Its key-university
admission rate has also been among the highest
in our province for years. In the past one hundred
years, more than 40,000 students have graduated
from the school.
Since 1996, the school has won municipal and provincial
Advanced Education & Science Research Collective
titles three times in succession. In 1983, the
school was chosen as the National Advanced Collective
of “Five & Four Virtues” and Paragon of Morality
Education. In 1997, the general Party branch of
the school was appointed as an Advanced Grass-root
Party Organization. As the Advanced Collective
of Morality Education of 1999, it was confirmed
to deserve the title in 2003.
Educational Reform
Hangzhou
NO.2 Middle School is progressing in educational
reform, aiming at “spurring students to develop
on their own”. It has formed an “experience-to-penetration”
morality education mode, formulated a management
system focusing on quality-oriented education,
established its own morality education course
system, and also designed an ideal class mode.
Its education reform walks in the front row of
the whole province.
Excellent Staff
In the
past hundred years, Hangzhou NO.2 Middle School
has assembled a number of great teachers such
as Zhu Kezhen, a famous scientist and educationist,
who bore innumerable tribulations to set up the
State-Run Zhejiang University Affiliated Middle
School where professor Su Buqing, a famous mathematician,
also gave lessons, Yuan Zhenhua, who used music
to arouse students’ love for the country when
the nationality is at stake, Xu Yue, the first
Chinese headmaster of Huilan Middle School, who
was famous for his strict school administration,
Zhao Chuanjia, a school director of Huilan Middle
School, who advocated the “easy-study” style which
helped him win President Jiang Zemin’s praise;
the famous poet Ai Qing, who became a teacher
of Huilan Middle School after he wrote the famous
poem “My Nurse Da Yanhe.”; professor Song Junfu,
a famous sports educationist, who led Liu Changchuan
to take part in the Olympic Games for the first
time representing China.
At present, our school has formulated a vocationally
proficient teachers’ staff have excellent teaching
ethics. Headed by Xu Chengnan, a “meritorious
teacher” of Zhejiang Province and the former headmaster
of Hangzhou NO.2 Middle School, the staff appears
to have a rational structure. Up till now, there
are 18 “teachers of special classification” in
the province, 13 teachers who have won the provincial
“Rising-star” titles and 31 with municipal “Rising-star”
titles. Among the teachers, seventeen are regarded
as the leaders of the “Cross-century Course” both
in the first and second levels, one is regarded
as the National Advanced Educator, one is the
National Model Worker in education system, one
is the National Outstanding Teacher and one is
one of the Top Ten Youths in Hangzhou. More than
ten teachers are “community directors” in the
city, province, or national level. There is one
doctor, ten masters in our school and more than
30 teachers have finished post-graduate courses.
Besides, one teacher is expecting his doctor’s
degree.

Flourishing Worldwide
Many social celebrities once studied in the school.
Chen He-Qing, an educationist, Yu Da-Fu and Lu
Li, famous writers, Feng Yi-Dai, a literature
translator and prose writer, Song Jun-Ru, a physical
educationist, Dong Xi-Wen and Wu Shan-Ming, well-known
artists, Liu Zhuang, the noted composer of Central
Musical Crops, Chen Cong-Zhou, a garden architecture
are all among the most well known schoolmates.
14 academicians of Chinese Science Academy such
as Yuan Fu, a chemist, Qian Ning, an irrigation
expert, Zhou Ben-Lian, a material physical expert,
Jin Jian-Ming, an environmentalist, He Xin-Gui,
an aviation expert once received their basic education
here. Till now, more than 60 graduates are awarded
the Special Allowance from the State Government.
What’s more, some graduates have turned senior
officials of the state, and some even became martyrs
for protecting the properties of the country.
Recently, a great many young graduates are also
making great achievements. When they are admitted
into universities, some are awarded “Ten Standouts”
of Qinghua University; some are included in the
“Top Ten” students in Shanghai. In 1998, Wu Xian-An
got a gold medal in the 29th International Physics
Olympic Games for middle school students. In 2000,
Tang Yan-Wei got a gold medal in the 32nd Chemistry
Olympic Games for middle school students. In 1999,
Chen Li-Xian was chosen as a student academician
of the Juvenile Academy of Science. In 2001, Gou
Sheng got the title for the second time. Before
long, Lu Tian-zheng was awarded the “President
Prize” in the USA for his achievement in science
field.
Campus
Culture
With deep historical culture, the school’s outstanding
education tradition has been accumulated and settled.
Today its modern campus culture is guiding students
to “seek to be outstanding and first-class”.

According to the standard of the first class key
middle school in the province, our school is equipped
with the first-class education facility in the
world.
International Cooperation
Hangzhou NO.2 High School is the twin school of
several famous schools in England, Australia,
and Germany. It has also established a harmonious
cooperative relationship with nearly 20 middle
schools or education organizations both in the
USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, Singapore and Hong
Kong and Taiwan.
Development
Since 2001, Hangzhou NO.2 High School has become
a modern school with three campuses, developing
on both sides of the Qiangtang River.
In the following five years, the school, as proposed
in the development plan, will become a guiding
modern school in Zhejiang Province, a first-class
experimental school in China and an international
school with high reputation through the joint
efforts of the staff.
